I SCENE I
Set in 2008, during the economic downfall, in present day
Australia. GERALD is sitting in a
chair in the unemployment office. He is filling out a form for unemployment.
Enter
DRAKE, MARTIN, and STACY
DRAKE: Hey Gerald, how you been holding up?
GERALD: Hey
guys, I have been well tired of this form, geez how can a young guy like me not
find a job.
MARTIN: Victoria
is a place where young people can hardly find jobs here. I just got out of
college and I can’t even find a job.
STACY: I know
what you mean Martin; I can’t even deal with the mess that is going on with
this young people getting unemployed and stuff.
GERALD: (goes towards a drink machine with MARTIN,
DRAKE, and STACY) Out of all the people
it happens to us.
GERALD drinks the soda while he is walks
towards STACY
STACY: (sits near DRAKE next to the window)
Really I don’t see how we could still be unemployed I have a master' and I can’t
even find a job that pays minimum wage.
MARTIN: Well
we are part of the group of young people that are unemployed in Australia.
DRAKE: (wipes his hands off with a Kleenex) you
have a point, but it still isn’t fair.
GERALD: Nothing
is fair. It’s just how it works ‘round here.
DRAKE gets up and starts to leave
DRAKE: Well
you are right but gosh why is it like this?
Exit DRAKE
GERALD: (facing
STACY and MARTIN while he is taking his form to the desk) really this is so
stressful I have graduated from college at the top of my class and I still have
fill out measly unemployment forms just so I can live, what a bunch of crap.
GERALD, STACY, and MARTIN walk outside
to their vehicles
MARTIN: (unlocking
the car door for STACY) look on the bright side, I mean there will be jobs
to come. Just have faith buddy it will all work out.
GERALD inside the car
GERALD: I
hope so, this is ridiculous, how can I pay my bills or my loans off? I ope
something comes up.
Exit GERALD, STACY, and MARTIN
